What to expect with your new hearing aids

When you first start wearing Jabra hearing aids, you might experience a period of adjustment as your brain gets used to the new sounds, even if you already used hearing aids before.

Going for a walk might be a surprise: Things might sound louder than you remember, like birdsong or a soft rustling of leaves. This is because you likely haven’t heard them in years.  So give it time. The goal is for you to almost forget you’re even wearing them.

What to expect

  • Loud sounds: You might notice that everyday sounds, like footsteps, running water, or crinkling paper are much louder. This is totally normal and will get better with time.
  • Tiredness: You might feel a little tired because your brain is working harder to process all the new sounds.
  • Awareness of your ear canal: It's normal to notice the hearing aids sitting in your ears and have a general awareness of the domes inside your ear canal. Awareness and mild itching are normal and should improve with time. See below for finding your best fit.
  • Tinny, sharp, or “unnatural” sounds: The hearing aids might not sound exactly like what you remember before having hearing loss. This is also normal! It takes time to get used to hearing in a new way.

Tips for getting used to hearing aids

  • Try to wear the hearing aids as much as you can comfortably. If you need to take breaks, that's ok! The goal is to eventually wear them all day.
  • Wear them even in quiet settings to get the most benefit. If you only wear them when you think you “need” them, it can be very overwhelming and it will take longer to adapt to them.
  • Make sure you are getting a proper fit as that makes a big difference in sound quality and comfort. Learn more about finding your best fit.
