Hearing aids use beeps and tones to communicate important information. Some beeps are expected and simply confirm that a setting has changed. Others may indicate that your hearing aids need attention.
Use the guide below to identify what you're hearing and what to do next.
Beeps that indicate your hearing aids need attention
A musical tune every 7 seconds
What you'll hear: a repeating musical tone that many customers say sounds similar to “The Wheels on the Bus.”
What it means: Your hearing aid has detected an issue with the receiver wire (the thin wire that connects the hearing aid to the speaker in your ear).
This can happen if:
- The receiver wires are accidentally attached to the wrong hearing aids
- The receiver wire is not fully connected
- The receiver wire is a different power level than the hearing aid expects
What to do:
Step 1: Check the receiver wire color indicators (on the little box or speaker that goes into your ear canal).
🔴 Red receiver wire = Right hearing aid
🔵 Blue receiver wire = Left hearing aid
Make sure each receiver wire is attached to the matching hearing aid. If you need to remove the receiver wires to attach them to the correct sides, you can follow these instructions.
Step 2: If they are already attached to the correct sides, try removing them and reattaching them to make sure they are seated correctly following these instructions.
Step 3: Still hearing the tone? Contact our Customer Support Team. The hearing aid may be detecting a power level mismatch, and our team will be able to help you out.
4 descending beeps every 15 minutes
What you'll hear: Four descending beeps that repeat approximately every 15 minutes. This can be in one hearing aid or both hearing aids.
What it means: The battery is running low on the side you're hearing the beeps.
What to do: Just place the hearing aids in the charging case to charge. A full charge takes about 3 hours and should give you at least a full day's use of hearing unless you are streaming audio through the hearing aids for many hours a day. If you're running into charging issues, find troubleshooting steps here.
Beeps you can expect to hear
Startup beeps
What you'll hear: 11 quick beeps when you remove your hearing aids from the charger.
What it means: The hearing aids are starting up and giving you time to place them in your ears before amplification begins.
Volume change beeps
What you'll hear: A single beep confirms that the volume has changed. Keep in mind this happens when you quickly press and release the push button on either hearing aid. You may also hear a double beep when you've reached the maximum or minimum volume level. Remember that the right hearing aid push button raises the volume for both hearing aids and the left push button lowers the volume for both hearing aids.
Listening environment beeps
When switching listening environments by holding down the push button on either hearing aid for about 2 seconds and then releasing, you'll hear:
1 beep = All Around
2 beeps = Restaurant
3 beeps = Music
4 beeps = Outdoor
These beeps confirm which environment is active. Keep in mind, you only need to change the environment on one hearing aid. The other side will change automatically.
Beeps when making a change in the Jabra Enhance Select app
In general, you'll hear confirmation beeps whenever you make a change in the app. Including when you:
- Turn Speech Clarity on or off
- Turn Noise Filter on or off
- Turn Bass or Treble Boost on or off
- Adjust bass, middle, or treble settings
- Change listening environments
- Increase or decrease volume
Phone or mobile device notifications
If your hearing aids are connected to your phone, you may hear calls, texts, and other notifications through your hearing aids. These sounds are coming from your phone, not from the hearing aids themselves. For more information about how to manage alerts and streaming from your phone, see this article.
What if you're not hearing any beeps?
If your hearing aids normally provide alerts and confirmations but you are no longer hearing them, it's a great indication that your hearing aids are plugged and need to be cleaned. For guided cleaning steps, head to this article.
