What to do if one hearing aid stops working

It can be frustrating when you’re ready to start your day and find that one of your hearing aids isn’t producing sound. Try not to worry -  most of the time it's a simple issue that you can fix at home in just a few minutes.

This guide will walk you through a step-by-step process to identify the problem and get you back to hearing clearly.

Step 1: Make sure it’s powered up

Before diving into cleaning, let's ensure the hearing aid is receiving power.

  • Check the LED lights: Place your hearing aid into the charging case. You should see the LED on the hearing aid "pulse" green, which indicates it is charging.
  • Manual power on: If you don’t see the LED light up, take the hearing aid out of the charging case and press and hold the push button for about 7 seconds until the LED light flashes green.
  • Waking up the aids: If you haven't used them in a few days, they may be in "sleep mode." Simply placing them in the charger and taking them back out should wake them up. If not, try pressing and holding the push button for about 7 seconds until the LED light flashes green.

Check to see if this was the issue. If not, move onto the next step.

Step 2: Check the app

Your Jabra Enhance Select app is a powerful diagnostic tool. Open the app on your phone to get some more information.

  • Connection Status: Look at the "Hear" tab in the app.
  • If the aid shows: "Connected," but you still hear no sound, the issue is likely a physical blockage in the speaker so you can move onto step 3.
  • If the aid shows: "Disconnected,” But you can hear the "Start-Up" beeps when you turn it on, this is a connectivity issue rather than a broken device. Please refer to this article for help re-pairing your device.

Step 3: Replace your dome and wax guard

  • Replace your dome: Gently pull the dome off the end of the receiver wire.
  • Replace your wax guard: Use your wax filter tool to remove the old white filter at the tip of the receiver and replace it with a fresh one.
  • Put on a new dome: Use a fresh dome from your kit to ensure a clean start. We recommend using the same size and style dome that you just removed from your hearing aids.

Pro Tip: We recommend changing your wax filters during your monthly “deep cleans” to prevent sound from fading.
Check to see if changing the wax guard and dome restored your sound. If not, move onto the next step.

Step 4 (Enhance Select 700 users only): Replace the microphone filters

If the sound is still weak or distorted after changing your domes and wax guards, and you are using the Enhance Select 700s, use your microphone filter tool to replace the two small filters on the top of the hearing aid body. Learn how.

Check to see if changing your microphone filters restored your sound. If not, move onto the next step.

Step 5: The "receiver swap" test

If you’ve performed the cleaning steps and the aid is still quiet or not producing sound, we need to figure out if the issue is with the hearing aid itself or the receiver wire. The steps below will tell us where the problem is so we know how to fix it.

  • Prepare your space: Lay out a towel on a flat surface. Keep your "working" aid and "non-working" aid clearly separated so you don't mix them up. Then,
  • The results:
    • If the “non-working” aid now produces sound: Your hearing aid is healthy, and you simply need a replacement receiver wire.
    • If the “non-working” aid is still not working: The issue is with the hearing aid itself.

After completing this test, contact us with your results. Having the results of this test will help us get your issue resolved much faster. You can call us: 1-800-854-2772 or email us: support@jabraenhance.com so we can get you back to hearing your best.
