What to do if both hearing aids stop working

It can be frustrating when you’re ready to start your day and find that your hearing aids aren’t working. But try not to worry - most of the time it’s a simple fix. This guide will walk you through a step-by-step process to identify the problem and get you back to hearing clearly.

Step 1: Check the basics

Before diving into cleaning, let's ensure the hearing aids are getting power.

  • Check the LED lights: Place your hearing aids into the charging case. You should see the LED on the hearing aids "pulse" green, which indicates they’re charging.
  • Manual power on: If you don’t see the LEDs lighting up, take the hearing aids out of the charging case and press and hold the push button on both aids for about 7 seconds until the LED light flashes green.

If you see the lights on both hearing aids when they are in the charging case, but they are not producing sound, move onto the next step.

Step 2: Check the app

Your Jabra Enhance Select app is a powerful diagnostic tool. Open the app on your phone to get some more information.

  • Connection status: Look at the "Hear" tab in the app.
  • If they show connected (green dot underneath both in the upper left hand corner), but you’re not getting any sound, then move onto step 3.
  • If they show disconnected (red dot underneath both in the upper left hand corner), but you still hear "Start-Up" beeps when you turn them on, this is a connectivity issue rather than broken hearing aids. Please refer to this article for help re-pairing your devices.

Step 3: Replace your domes and wax guards

  • Remove the domes: Gently pull the domes off the end of the receiver wires.
  • Change the wax guards: Use your wax filter tool to remove the old white filter at the tip of the receiver and replace it with a fresh one (complete this for both hearing aids).
  • Put on new domes: Use fresh domes from your kit to ensure a clean start. We recommend using the same size and style dome that you just removed from your hearing aids.

Pro Tip: We recommend changing your wax filters when you “deep clean” once a month to prevent sound from fading.
Check to see if changing the wax guards and domes restored your sound. If not, move onto the next step.

Step 4 (Enhance Select 700 users only): Replace the microphone filters

If the sound is still weak or distorted after changing the domes and wax filters, use your microphone filter tool to replace the two small filters on the top of both hearing aids. Learn how.

Check to see if changing your microphone filters restored your sound. If not, move onto the next step.

Step 5: Check for moisture

If you’ve completed all the steps above and both aids are still not producing sound, it could be a moisture issue. If both hearing aids are affected, then it’s typically something that they have both experienced contact with - like moisture from rain, sweat, or humidity. This can happen even in dry climates.

To rule this out, we recommend using an electric dry aid kit like this or a desiccant jar like this to remove any buildup of moisture in your hearing aid components. Then, check to see if this restored your sound.
